Minutes for February 26, 2008

Our guest speaker was Jeff Coleman, Commissioner of Public Works. Council members Stowe and Fertel also attended.
Mr. Coleman spoke about the services provided by the city. He referred to the brochure or booklet mailed to all addresses that tells you who to contact when there is a problem with or question about city services. He also suggested calling him direct if the issue is not resolved.
All homeowners are asked to log on to the city web site and enter their home phone number for emergency information, for example, the canceling of garbage and recycling pick up during the last snow storm.
The county laws on recycling remain the same, the emphasis has changed. Recyclables are sold for a profit. This can reduce the sanitation cost of approximately $70,000 per month.
There are pilot projects to see how the service can be improved or the cost reduced. There are two on going now and the residents will be surveyed.
Forget clear pllastic bags they are not a requirement for recycling.
It was stated that a person can go through your curbside garbage, that in itself is not illegal. They are not allowed on your propery.
Tires are not picked up because there is no state program for them and that would make the cost prohibitive for the county.
It was suggested that sanitation be more careful to put cans back properly and not bump cars.
Flood zones in our area have changed. There are maps in the Building Dept. and in the Engineering Office. You are obligated to get flood insurance if the morgage company requires it.
Trees on Stephenson islands were cut down because they were dead or interfering with the underground conduit. They will be replaced in March with salt resistant varities.
Stops signs on Pratt and Adams streets were agian discussed. Lookinto the city's traffic calming program. It may help. (We have acommittee, please join it.)
Council members Fertel and Stowe answered other questions.
The moratorium on development in older areas has led to the possible rezoning of different areas in the city.
Retail is coming to New Roc. The proposal is in City Hall.
Our PAC officer is gone. We would like one to be assigned just to our area.
City Yard is moving. Questions arose about the appropriateness of the new site in terms of safety.
