Topics of Discussion
- Guest Speaker: New Rochelle Police Officer Ray Andolina reviewed
for the group recent police activity in our area. This included:
A survey on Stephenson Blvd that was taken due to complaints about
speeding. In August 2003. Of 32,000 cars traveling southbound the average speed was 29 MPH. Not bad. Of these 101 were 40-45
MPH.
A survey on Lispenard Avenue showed 21,000 cars with average speed
of 14 mph. Of these 14 where greater than 30 mph.
500 tickets were written this year, in this neighborhood
alone.
A drug arrest, which included a plain-clothes unit of officers,
was made near the Racquet club. The Racquet club has since cleared shrubs, landscaping and graffiti to avoid future incidents.
There were arrests of 7-8 kids for graffiti done in the park including
a van that was spray painted, and the theft of a cell phone. All were charged and their cases tried in family court. The graffiti
was cleaned and all the children were under 16 years old and all were residents of our neighborhood.
Specific traffic complaints were addressed to officer Andolina.
These included. The need for better one way signs on Monroe Street including enforcement of the one-way laws. Officer Andolina
repeatedly stated: The officer has to SEE the violation in order to write a ticket. Thats the
law. Videotape and pictures are not good enough. Many times a moving violation is already over by the time an officer
arrives on the scene. Nonetheless, he encouraged the audience to call the police department to report violations. The non-emergency
number is 654 2300 and an anonymous call can be made to 632 COPS. (Members of the audience agreed that this is
truly an anonymous number).
Always get a name when you call , reported
Officer Andolina. Keep a written log of the calls you made and who took the call, and he will follow it up if necessary. He ended the meeting distributing his card. His office number is 654 -2269. The address
of the police department is 90 Beaufort Place. 10801
